Prostate Health
With all the attention on prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate health is a growing concern among men, and many are seeking safe and natural alternatives to promote optimal health. BPH is a non-cancerous condition where the prostate becomes enlarged.
Research indicates that people who eat more foods containing flax lignans may have a lower risk of prostate cancer. Natural flax lignans can contribute to prostate health in terms of BPH. Lignans play a valuable role in influencing hormone metabolism, especially testosterone. In this sense, lignans may help maintain a healthy prostate with their influence over the metabolism of testosterone, which has an important role in the development of BPH and prostate cancer.
Studies at Duke Medical School showed that men with prostate cancer who were given a low-fat diet plus flaxseed for 34 days recorded a reduction in testosterone levels, lower rates of cancer cell growth and a trend towards lower prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels, which are a marker for prostate cancer.
